Chapter Summary: Realization dawns on you on Halloween and it culminates on the night before you leave.

Ch: 4/4

You are severely regretting introducing Bro to your Sis because somehow it seems that everyone in your new friends is in a joke only they know and you have a hunch it has do with your new best bro John but you're not really sure you want in. You do what you do best when it comes to things that is probably a game changer, you ignore it.

Because a problem ain't a problem unless you make it to be one.

So now you're currently helping in the early preparations of the Egbert household for Halloween. You, Dad and John were inside the mall finding stuff here and there to experience the full blast of Egbertian Halloween Traditions and you were so pumped up for this it shows in the fashionable clothes you were currently wearing that was enough to identify you as a college student and get discounts.

And you were damn good at getting discounts from cashiers. Thank god for that one time your friend was gunning for a Theatre Arts student that forced you to accompany her in acting classes.

You happily walked over to John once you paid for everything at a discounted price that didn't even make a dent on Dad's other credit card. Of course despite the peaceful and fun days you've had with John you knew you were bound to encounter another problem. You are so totally hoping they weren't like those girls pictured in films because really they were cute and on the side of the type you'd usually ask out if they were y'know you're age.

Regardless you put on your best innocent face and butt in their conversation.

"John, I'm back!" You cheerily called out to him and the relief he had was visible enough that even the two girls noticed it.

"Welcome back!" He greets back and you could hear the gratefulness in his voice when he says your name.

"Are they your friends?" You asked gesturing to the two girls and giving them a perfectly polite smile.

"Um..."

"School mates, We're John's schoolmates." One of them answers and you smile, arranging your paper bags to shake their hands.

They take it and you introduced yourself and they returned the gesture and John's standing there awkwardly wondering what you were planning. He was close enough with you now to understand that you were protective of him but not close enough to understand your inner workings.

You decided it was time to put your college education to test by playing mind games with these two. If you could get out from them what they wanted from John without voicing it out you'd celebrate by teaching John a thing or two about power plays.

And you engaged them into small talk while John agrees with you on certain points but mostly staying silent while he carried the rest of the plastic bags you were carrying along with the paper bags.

"Having a long distance relationship must be hard since you're in college." One comments and you smiled.

"No, not really after all, John is simply the best there is for me." You answered vaguely enough to cover whatever insinuation she had and you can't resist adding, "Besides there's nothing talking can't solve."

She smiles and you know you've won this mind game when she and her friend bids you and John good-bye.

"What was that all about?" John asks once they're out of sight and you answer,

"They wanted to know whether I was your college girlfriend if that girl's question wasn't obvious enough."

"No," John whined, "That much I could understand it's the part that you-you...um...pretended? to be one that confuses me."

"Oh, well people at your school would probably leave you alone now that they understand you're getting a mack on with a college girl..." You frown, "If what Dave says about Western high schools are true."

You haven't really bothered to double check it with the others, taking John's Best Bro's word at face value though you're starting to regret that since John's having this weird look on his face that you really really can't describe.

'4 years and I'm still shit at this social stuff.' You thought.

"Let's go meet, Dad." He says abruptly and you followed him.

You take a glance at him and the tips of his ears caught your attention, somehow it is at this moment things start making sense for you not necessarily in a way that it all falls into place, it's just that your getting an inkling of what exactly is happening.

And you're not quite sure that you're prepared for this yet so like all things that you didn't want to deal with...you feign ignorance.

John has talked to Dave and Rose about this and all of it leads to one thing and he's not quite sure he has enough courage to tell you not when you're about to go back and graduate.

Right now, even when he's this close to you having fun and teaching you how to make decorations, it's there in the back of his mind and he's equal parts afraid and exhilarated about this feeling that just might be love towards you.

He knows this because somehow everything about you is laden with more beauty now that he's feeling, things you do are now catching his attention in a different manner he can't classify. As if his brain is now a subscriber to what you were doing.

He wants to know more about you just to understand you better, John knows there are stories behind the things you like and dislike. It doesn't matter if it's happy or sad, he just wants to know the stories behind you because it feels like he'd know you better base on how you tell them. He knows this because he'd heard how you described that painting in one of their museums, The best way to learn about you and understand you was through the words you used the nuances you put into it.

"Oi, Egdork! Stop ignoring your gal pal and tell me whether this is up to Egbert Halloween Props Standards."

He blinked and laughed softly,"I can hear those capitalizations and yeah it is."

'Seven days,' He thought and looked at you once more,'Seven days to make up my mind.'

You felt John looking at you and you ignore it putting your focus in creating the best Halloween Decorations their eyes have ever feast upon. You are putting 120% of your energy in creating a memorable Western Halloween for yourself as Halloween had never been that much of an event for you in real life. You are most definitely not going to allow your brain to go over to the train of thought which is going to lead you to the inevitable event. Nope, you are not.

You decided it was high time to cockblock your sister over pesterchum.

You've decided that it is better to abort mission while still possible. You logged off at pesterchum because Dave would definitely tell this to Rose and that is just a disaster waiting to happen.

You went back to creating decorations.

It is now Halloween and you are currently ignoring whatever tension has sparked between you and John. Yeah you are currently not doing a great job at this since right now your traitorous heart is beating to fast and you're quite sure John could hear this.

'Oh my god.' You thought, 'Where are those god damn trick-or-treaters?!'

John's head is currently not in the game. Now that he has made up his mind and is going to confess to you today in Halloween he is beyond nervous and is ready to abort mission but he already talked about this to his Dad and he really really doesn't want to disappoint his Dad even though he thinks Dad would understand if he backed out.

You really couldn't ignore the clues any longer, you could keep on pretending and hurt him even more or just plainly turn him down and hurt him less. You know that John is a decent guy despite his social awkwardness and low self-esteem so you're not really worried about this turning ugly for you, you're much more concerned that John would end up in a downward spiral considering the hints that his friends have dropped on you. Apparently John's crush on Roxy couldn't even compare to what he was feeling towards you and though from what Rose told you, what he had with Dave was close enough to what he was feeling for you.

And that spoke volumes because you know that a.) Dave is John's best bro b.) Fave person in the world and c.) cares a lot for the dude so much that their friendship levels is stronger than girls' friendship.

Which makes you a whole lot more nervous now that he said he wants to tell you something. No amount of mental preparation could prepare you for this and you really hope to god your eloquence doesn't leave you behind for this. You'll need all the tact you have to not let things sour between you both.

You mentally applaud John for his choice of venue. Secluded enough to prevent eavesdropper but not enough to makes this scary for you not to mention he was standing at least 2 meters away from you.

He's smart about this, you'll give him that.

He makes small talk and you're getting progressively nervous about this.

'Do not think about the Tarmac Scene.'

Which defeated it when you thought about that Tarmac Scene and you're getting a feeling that—oh he's looking serious better listen now and stop being a shit person.

"—I'm sorry if this feels like a betrayal to you and-um...I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings...and I-er- I just wanted to be honest with you that-that I'm in love with you-and I'm fine if you don't answer me right now-and I totally understand if you decide that you won't ever answer me or-um say no because-you know it's your right and-um—I-I just really really wanted and needed to tell you this and-I'm sorry again."

'Wow,He just really needed to use 'in love' and okay so he probably wasn't planning to offer me fake friendship okay, I get that much but—'

"Do you even understand the nuance of "I'm in love with you"?" You blurted out and you didn't stop yourself from face palming.

'Way to go douche.' You thought angrily at yourself.

"um-yeah-I do, I kinda talked to Rose about this." He answered and scratched the back of his neck.

You sighed and thanked Rose for that however this makes things a whole lot more complicated for you. But thanks to the fact that you don't bother much with reactions when it comes to problems you've already found the almost answer to this one.

"Okay," You say holding a hand up,"Give me time to think about this, since I have 3 days left I'll tell you my answer on the last day."

And though he looks down, he still gives you a smile and thanks you for your time. The two of you walked back inside chatting like regular friends who didn't just confessed to the other and waiting for a reply.

You give him that much of a consideration since really John was a decent guy and not to mention he's the kindest person you've ever met and that was saying something. Too bad he's eighteen and you know that his is really were your concerns are lying.

And it pretty much centers on that fact for the whole 2 and 1/2 days you were debating your answer.

Even though there is only a 2 year age gap between you and John, you're aware that you're mental maturity and emotional maturity had a great deal of a difference from when you were 18 and now. John still had college to meet someone who would probably match up to what he had to Dave and more, romantic relations-wise, and you've never been the type to make an effort to talk to friends that demand your attention.

You and your friends have reached this level of understanding where keeping-in-touch means hanging out once a month and few calls here and there. A need-to-know basis where it suited you perfectly.

John however was probably someone who'd feel lonely if you didn't make an initiative to talk to him every other day.

'He'd probably put me as part of his schedule and try to talk to me even in exam week.' You thought, 'If he does that I'll block him.'

You had the real world waiting for you and John had college for him. And whatever relationship you both would cultivate at this point would only hinder both of you and you knew that you've already made your decision.

It was final and there was no turning back.

The day of your flight back to home, you were unbelievable calm about what was about to happen and you had to since John was visibly nervous about this. One of you had to keep their wits with them.

You cherished the last moments of small talk Dad was having with you even though each land mark you passed felt like a countdown to the inevitable. The conclusion of this autumn vacation you had. The ride seemed faster than the one you had when you arrived and the views seemed to bring out the maudlin out of you.

'There's no turning back.' You thought and gathered every strength you had to face this with determination and courage.

After all you just didn't do this for anything or for anyone.

You've arrived outside the departures area and had asked for a private talk with John. Even though what you were about to do just might be cruel to John, you had to take a moment to savor his nervousness like the sadist that you were, besides he had to know what he was going to since he confessed to you.

"John."

"Yeah?"

"Just take a deep breath, inhale-exhale, to calm yourself." You ordered and he followed. Once you saw that he was calm you smiled and at him and said,

"Two years. In two years time if your feelings remain the same I'll properly consider you."

"What do you mean?" He asked confused and timid.

"What I mean is that, this is me telling you that we'd both wait for two years before I consider your confession, I'm not saying that we can't communicate with each other during those two years, I'm saying that though 18 and 20 doesn't have that much of a big gap years-wise, emotionally and mentally-wise the gap is huge." I replied.

"Oh-I- I'm sorry that I didn't cover that with Rose." John told you and you gently smiled at him,

"It's fine John, You and your friends are still young, I'm not expecting for you guys to know everything that I do."

"Yeah,and-um- I understand what you just said about-um-my confession and I'm willing to wait for two years." John fidgeted as he told you this and somehow you're getting a feeling things just might turn out fine between you two, romantic or otherwise.

Your flight was about to board so you decided to end this conversation already, "Well then, see you until two years, John."

He smiled at you and returned your sentiments.

"Until two years, pester me when you get back ok?"

You smiled and left for home.
